  15.      NOTE: Please  take a  few moments to carefully read this file, it
  16.      will give  you an  overview of  hardware/software requirements to
  17.      run FasType,  including simple installation instructions, and how
  18.      to quickly get started using FasType.

  20.           FasType  for   Windows  is   a   typing   tutorial   program
  21.      SPECIFICALLY designed  for PC's  running  the  Microsoft  Windows
  22.      Operating  System.    This  includes  Windows  3.1,  Windows  for
  23.      Workgroups, Windows/NT,  and Windows  95, using  high-quality VGA
  24.      and  SVGA  plus  the  101-Key  Standard  Keyboard.    The  simple
  25.      installation instructions that follow will get you up and running
  26.      quickly.

  30.      HARDWARE/SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS:

  32.           FasType is  distributed on  one 1.44MB 3.5" diskette; on CD-
  33.      ROM, or  by various  BBS's and  on-line  services,  and  has  the
  34.      following minimum requirements to run properly:
  35.  
  36.           o  Any 386, 486, or Pentium computer
  37.           o  Windows-95; Windows 3.1; Windows for Workgroups; or
  38.              Windows-NT
  39.           o  4MB RAM, (8MB recommended)
  40.           o  A HARD DISK with at least 2MB of available space
  41.           o  VGA or SVGA display capability - (will NOT work on EGA or
  42.              CGA)
  43.           o  One floppy disk drive or CD-ROM to install disk or CD-ROM
  44.              distributed versions.
  45.           o  101-Key Enhanced keyboard or equivalent.

  48.                   ****   INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS   ****

  50.           If you  downloaded FasType  from a  BBS or  on-line service,
  51.      then you have to first un-zip the file into a temporary directory
  52.      then run SETUP from the temporary directory.
  53.  
  54.           If  you're   installing  from   either  a  sub-directory,  a
  55.      temporary directory,  or from  a distribution  floppy or  CD-ROM,
  56.      simply perform the following steps:
  57.  
  58.           o  Bring up Windows
  59.           o  Run SETUP using either the Windows File Manager, or the
  60.              Run... menu selection. If you're running from the File
  61.              Manager, select the PATH where FasType's SETUP.EXE
  62.              program resides, and click on it to start the SETUP
  63.              process.
  64.           o  From the FILE/RUN menu, type A:SETUP or B:SETUP or
  65.              whichever floppy or CD-ROM address the FasType files
  66.              reside.

  68.           o  Follow the instructions as you proceed through the
  69.              install process.

  71.      At the end of installation, the setup program will create a
  72.      Program Group with several icons. You'll be prompted with a list
  73.      of selections for what to do next.

  76.      IMPORTANT NOTE: FasType CANNOT be installed onto and run from
  77.      floppy disks!

  81.      TO RUN FASTYPE:
  82.           Before you  can run  FasType, it  must be  "installed" under
  83.      Windows.    See  the INSTALLATION  INSTRUCTIONS  above  for  more
  84.      information.  From the FasType Program Group, double-click on the
  85.      ICON that says FASTYPE.

  88.      WHAT TO DO NEXT:
  89.           The Title  Window will appear and stay in view while FasType
  90.      loads  its  tables  and  auxiliary  files.  Next,  the  Shareware
  91.      Information screen  will  appear.    Please  read  it  carefully;
  92.      FasType is  distributed on  a try-before-you-buy  basis, and  you
  93.      have 30  days to  evaluate the  program.  Click on OK to get past
  94.      this screen.

  99.                ONCE YOU'VE  EXCEEDED THE  EVALUATION PERIOD,
  100.                THE STARTUP  GRAPHIC SCREEN AND ALL SHAREWARE
  101.                INFORMATION  SCREENS   WILL  PERSIST  ON  THE
  102.                DISPLAY FOR  LONGER  AND  LONGER  PERIODS  OF
  103.                TIME.  HOWEVER, YOU WILL STILL BE ABLE TO USE
  104.                FASTYPE AND  ALL AVAILABLE  FEATURES!  PLEASE
  105.                READ  THE   OPENING  AND   CLOSING  SHAREWARE
  106.                INFORMATION SCREENS FOR MORE DETAILS.

  110.      SELECTING MENU ITEMS:
  111.           Choose a  Typing Drill or Exercise from the SKILL MENU, then
  112.      click the  mouse on  START TYPING,  or --  more preferably,  type
  113.      <Alt>+<s> to select the menu item START TYPING from the keyboard.

  116.      WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO:
  117.           For DRILLS:  Place the fingers of each hand on the home keys
  118.      (ASDF JKL;) and type each letter as you are prompted for it.  The
  119.      program selects the letters randomly.  When the drill is finished
  120.      your "Words Per Minute" (WPM) score and other information will be
  121.      displayed on a typing statistics screen.

  123.           For EXERCISES:   lines  of text  will be displayed above the
  124.      screen keyboard;  type each character pointed to by the character
  125.      pointer (there  are four  to choose  from) and when you reach the
  126.      paragraph marker  symbol or end of the line, press the enter key,
  127.      or the  space bar.   When you finish typing the exercise your WPM
  128.      and other statistics will be displayed.

  130.           To STOP  TYPING, you can press the ESCAPE key anytime, click
  131.      the mouse on the STOP TYPING menu item, or type <Alt>+<s> again.

  134.      EVALUATION PERIOD:
  135.           You  are  licensed  to  operate  FasType  on  your  personal
  136.      computer for  evaluation as  to its usefulness to you, on a trial
  137.      basis for  30 days.   We  believe this to be a fair and equitable
  138.      time period  for evaluation  and we trust your good judgement and
  139.      sense of  fair play  in making  a decision regarding purchase and
  140.      registration. See  the file SHARWARE.TXT or click on the "What is
  141.      Shareware" icon  in the FasType Typing Tutorial program group for
  142.      a detailed  explanation  of  what  Shareware  is  and  how  using
  143.      Shareware programs can benefit you.

  146.      DOCUMENTATION:
  147.           The FasType  User Guide is located in the DOCS sub-directory
  148.      and can  be viewed  using the Windows WRITE Applet in the Fastype
  149.      Typing Tutorial  program group.   While  in WRITE, you can format
  150.      and print the document too.  But, if you REGISTER FasType, you'll
  151.      receive a  handsomely bound  and printed  User Guide so you don't
  152.      have to waste all that computer paper.

  171.           Site licenses  and right-to-copy  licenses are available for
  172.      all organizations.   FasType must be licensed for use in a class-
  173.      room environment.  Educational institutions requesting "LAB-PACK"
  174.      pricing can  use our  Right-To-Copy license  and price  schedule.
  175.      Read and/or  print  the  file  named  LICENSE.WRI  for  licensing
  176.      provisions, a complete contract, and full pricing schedule.

  179.      DATED SOFTWARE:
  180.           If today's date (the date you are reading this) is a year or
  181.      more later  than the date of the files on this distribution disk,
  182.      than please  contact Trendtech  Corporation for information about
  183.      the availability of a more current version of FasType.  Shareware
  184.      tends to  "acquire a life of its own" once it's released; not all
  185.      vendors and  BBS sysops  will bother  to  update  to  the  latest
  186.      version from  the author.   That  is why  you should  only buy or
  187.      download Shareware  from disk vendors or BBS's who are members of
  188.      "The Association of Shareware Professionals" (A.S.P.)

  201.           You can  only be  sure of  getting a  top-quality virus-free

  205.      or from  a reputable  BBS service.   Be suspicious of any program
